Tana's next chapter - our roadmap

Tana's 2024 development focus: Our plans to enhance user experience, develop mobile apps for iOS and Android, improve performance, and expand AI integration.

At Tana, we're on a mission to reinvent how humans, teams, and computers work together. Our vision is to make knowledge-work fast and effortless in an age of AI, remote and async teams, and fast-changing workflows. This vision has been clear since we started building the platform four years ago, and it continues to guide us today.

Many of our users have asked why we don't publish a traditional roadmap.

The truth is, as a startup operating in a dynamic environment, we've found that the classic fixed roadmap doesn't accurately reflect the iterative nature of our work. We know where we want to go, but the route to getting there is rarely a straight line. Some of our experiments don't pan out, and often we need to take a few steps back and try alternative routes as we fill in the white spaces on our map.

We hear that you want to better understand where we're going, and we want you to be part of our journey. So, instead of a traditional roadmap, we've decided to share our next "Chapter" with you. This approach allows us to remain flexible and responsive to the evolving needs of our users and the technological landscape while giving you insight into our current focus and priorities.

The next chapter: Our focus for the rest of 2024

Our primary goal for the remainder of 2024 is to make Tana smooth, fast, and easy for new users. This involves developing a useful and delightful mobile app (for both iOS and Android), enhancing the core experience of Tana to make it faster, and making the powerful Tana AI accessible to non-power users.

We're dividing our work into a set of priority tracks:

Making it easier to get into Tana for new users

Goal: Lower the learning curve for Tana and iterate tirelessly on improving the onboarding experience for new users.

Concrete Areas of Effort:

  • Improved in-context guidance
  • Better initial workspace setups
  • Enhanced navigation views (side-menu and tabs) to allow more familiar website-like structures in the node tree
  • Simplified UX for search nodes and filters

Providing a delightful mobile experience

Goal: Make Tana available on mobile phones with a UX tailored for mobile use cases.

Efforts: Develop improved caching solutions and use of server platform for features that require different implementations on mobile compared to the desktop app

Making Tana faster and more accessible

Goal: Improve loading times and overall UX speed.

Efforts: Implement support for some offline use (not fully local-first, but a step in that direction)

Strengthening the core aspects of Tana with focus on workflows

Fields: Introduce status fields for workflow definitions

Search & Search Nodes:

  • Make search faster and easier to set up and use for navigating information in Tana
  • Improve understanding of different node types: content, items, spaces
  • Implement semantic indexing

Iterate and Improve: Enhance existing features, focusing on maximizing impact driven by workflow use cases

Unlocking AI use in Tana:

Goal: Focus on voice interaction from mobile.

Efforts:

  • Refine our AI offerings to make simple tasks easier
  • Develop AI-assisted capturing and structuring of information directly into Tana's structure and processes
  • Enable all users to leverage AI in Tana to produce useful derived artifacts

We're excited about this next chapter in Tana's story. While we can't predict everything we'll release for the rest of the year, this overview should give you a good idea of our current focus areas. It also indicates what we probably won't get around to until future chapters.

We appreciate your continued support and feedback as we work towards making Tana the ultimate tool for knowledge work. Together, we're building a platform that adapts to your needs, enabling you to capture, understand, organize, and act on information more efficiently than ever before.

Stay tuned for updates as we progress through this chapter, and thank you for being part of the Tana community.
